Star Wars was a good story.  It had good characters following a compelling arc with enough action to satisfy but not overwhelm.  The main characters in the Avengers don't change appreciably from their previous respective movie incarnations (Black Widow and Hawkeye being decent exceptions) and the "witty banter" I was promised was exactly what I would have expected to play out, nothing more.  The main problem I had with it was Loki.  He's played as even more of a sniveling jackass in this story; his evil plans always fail, he always showboats himself into getting punched/exploded/thrown around like a toy and he is totally inappropriate for a villain.  This, in turn, totally kills the dramatic arc, which basically peaks when Hawkeye is attacking the carrier because he is the only really believable threat.  After he stops being a bad guy there is no credible threat to the world (besides the massive stupidity of firing a nuke at Manhattan), and the last hour of the movie is a very long, very dull action sequence.

It's not memorable, no one is going to be talking about it 10 years from now.  It's a dumb fun summer blockbuster with absolutely no value as anything more than eye candy.  Star Wars isn't the pinnacle of cinema, but it's had people talking for 35 years now and events like this are a big deal to everyone.

Maybe it wouldnt be quite the same legacy, but if the Avengers had the release cycle and ground breaking effects of Star Wars, it could become significant.

However, you are right with bringing up Star Wars sense of scale and pacing. The threat of New York being destroyed sort of desensitized you to ever other threat, except for maybe the threat of destroying the world, and by that point, youre really desenstized to it;

I liked the Avengers and also a lot of terrible movies, but the first Star Wars is definitely a better movie.

I couldn't stand the children in the audience. You know what I mean? It's like, you go to a movie, thinking it will be good, and it's like a fetching family movie. No boobies anywhere to be found, no Spiderman, and little kids laughing at everything. I thought the performances were OK. If only that talent hadn't been wasted.

BILLY DEE BABY

The Lando Trilogy.  Yes.

Lando
Lando: First Blood pt. 2
Lando 3

Maybe like 15-20 years later they'll make a cash-in sequel.
