My first taste of the internet was 1994, in college.  The school's library had just obtained some 28.8 kbit/s serial port modems, and there was a local BBS called FreeNet that we could dial into.  It was mostly chat rooms about Klingons, dating and Zork.

From here, I got a job working for Tandy Services in 1995, and had my first taste of AOL as I was being trained to install 56k internal modems.  Even then, my lizard senses knew to hate that poo poo.

In 1996, I moved to Massachusetts and, for the first time ever, I owned my own access to the internet, via a local dial-up ISP.  I also got my first taste of internet ownership, since everyone got 100MB of free space free with their account, so long as they didn't mind owning a domain name with a tilde in it.  You know, only the most popular button on the entire keyboard.

Then, in 2009, I got a headache and decided to stop writing.  Must be because this is like Hour Eleven of staring at a computer screen today.  G'nite y'all.

My internet began with the conception of Al Gore.  40 years later, BAM!  There's the intranets!

You know, only the most popular button on the entire keyboard.

If you were playing Quake 1 in 1996 it was one of the most popular buttons on your keyboard.

Anyways, to start myself off.  1995 we had AOL, and it was a version old enough to be on floppy diskette, so my guess would be version 2.0.  We used it for a couple of months, mostly to check out the chat rooms (which I had to be supervised, i still remember the one girl i met on there, her screenname was cegold and her name was melissa, and inb4 pedo).  Anyways, after a few months of that we got a local ISP, epix (which is still around to this day) with a 28k ISA modem and used netscape navigator.  That was when I was pretty much hooked on the internet, especialyl once Quake 1 came out most of my time was consumed playing that, downloading midis, hanging out on IRC (which obviously I still do all of these to this day, haha).  At some point we had a lightning storm and our 28k bit the dust and we upgraded to a 56k, I remember being so excited to upgrade to a 56k.  Damn, crazy poo poo.  I remember when IRC Warez was still cool, when MP3s were part of the IRC underground before napster hit the scene, my first goatse, and all other web 1.0 stuff.

good times :stamp:

I still dial-in to the few remaining BBS' around.  Most of them have switched over to telnet.  I still dial-in, mostly to play LORD.

I had dialup until 2006 or something, and thanks to having a several decade old phone line it never progressed past 28.8 kb/s

I'm actually the reason DSL exists in Willow Street, PA.  I called bitching that it said online we could get it but epix said on the phone we couldn't and I told them the CO was literally right across the street from my house, I  could see it out my window.  And the rep was like "oh really? well we'll send someone right out!" I was about 12 or so at the time, haha.

I broke AOL once by clicking through a ton of links on porn sites and opening like 30 separate windows when I was around 13.
