FWIW I live in Sandy which is actually 30 minutes south of SLC, so keep that in mind when you are looking at hotels.  Places like Midvale or Murray are probably cheaper and are closer to me than SLC.  There are a lot of buses and a light rail system for getting around though.

Also there is a casino town 2 hrs from SLC so we could ROADTRIP there and blow money since everyone is 21
