Scary math?

#1 18-01-2014, 13:32:07 PM
Maybe I know too many Ph D's in math and physics that bulllpoo poo is caught and scrutinized extremely fast. But this took me off guard.

Science tends to require the use of numbers. And while most of us probably have a tough time figuring out what all those numbers and letters and Greek symbols in algebra equations are supposed to mean, we're content to leave it to the experts to do all the understanding for us. Man, it would be hilariously terrifying if those experts turned out to be as clueless as the rest of us, wouldn't it?

Maybe.

I was looking for supportive evidence that papers outside physics/math that slap on a meaningless equation get published.

Or, I just have my head up my butt.

:EDIT:

I'll post this anyway because re-reading that article was kinda' offensive

The research by Eriksson (or "Kimmo the number wizard," as he is known in the humanities) is not the only evidence that scientists treat math as some mysterious occult force.

I don't think it's a coincidence that mathematicians are such peculiar people, with the most genius being especially eccentric.  The story of Simon Norton is fascinating.

of course they're bad at math, they're fetching cultural studies researchers, it's a bunch of crap to begin with if it involves math in any way

Yeah, I forgot about this one. Which I've heard hammered and bitched about on so many occasions. It is probably a near perfect example.

"The equality 0.999... = 1 has long been accepted by mathematicians and is part of general mathematical education. Nonetheless, some students find it sufficiently counterintuitive that they question or reject it, commonly enough that the difficulty of convincing them of the validity of this identity has been the subject of numerous studies in mathematics education."

Look at all those footnotes It must be right!  :leek:

3/3 = .9999999... FACT .9999.... =/= 1

There still is a plethora of offensive and hilarious whack jobs whom maintain that 0.999... doesn't equal one.

Quote
The 0.999... debate continues unabated on the internet, at school and university. The false assertion that 0.999... = 1, is supported only by Euler's ill-formed definition of infinite sum. Unfortunately many modern mathematicians subscribe to this nonsense. It is a price one pays for acceptance of ill-defined concepts.
