You need to aim better. Also, being that there's no good way to judge how far you are from a planet, you may tend to apply too much thrust early on and then have to make a return trip. To make up for this, I usually apply a little bit of thrust and then speed up time to the max, then set it back to normal speed and readjust as I get closer to the planet.
