Released in 2004, Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing was generally considered to be one of the worst games ever made at the time, due to how the game seemed to be unfinished. Having played it, this reviewer feels that the game deserves a 5/10. Not bad, not good, just neutral. The ability to drive over any terrain is a novel feature, and the inability to lose seems to add to the game. The other so-called problems, however, such as a lack of collisions, seem to detract from the game. As it turns out, the sequel to Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing entitled Midnight Race Club: Supercharged does feature some primitive collision detection. However, such collision detection does not allow a vehicle to slide and scrape along a surface, but rather bounce backwards off of it, regardless of angle or even velocity. I find the complete lack of collisions in BROTRR to be more enjoyable, but it makes one wonder what the game would be like with a modern collision system. As far as graphics are concerned, it leaves little to be desired except for the terrain to not pop through the road. All of the good and the bad of the game's environments come from its system of using a displacement map to generate the terrain of the levels. On paper, this sounds like a good system, but in Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing it is clear that the game would be much better off with hard-wired environments as opposed to these generated terrains. Unfortunately, BROTRR depends on these displacement maps to determine where the rigs collide with the terrain due to the lack of a proper collision system. However, there is some fun to be had playing Big Rigs. For instance, a player can always win, no matter what.

GameSpot was a little slow on the uptake, it seems! This should be in Best Games No-one Ever Played.
