I've rarely heard somebody say something is good without playing it, but people saying something is bad because AVGN/RedLetterMedia/Silent Rob/[insert another unfunny reviwer here] said so is unfortunately quite common. Case in point, the Philips CD-i games, BROTRR, Supez, Shaq Fu, ET, and many more have beome laughingstocks due to gossip, BS, unfunny fads created by 4chan, YTP, and half-truths.

It's easy to dismiss something you've never experienced because others say it's bad, you'd want to avoid doing something potentially unenjoyable. On the other hand, why would anyone say something is great without having experienced it? All the games I think are great or the best were things I loved as a kid or actually play a lot. For someone to claim something is great based purely on third party assertions is a clear indicator that they have absolutely no opinions of their own and are probably robots.

Best policy is to find a reviewer that you agree with on most things. I agree with Yahtzee about 95% of the time so I tend to wait for his reviews before making the decision to invest my time in a game. I also have Gamefly so I can rent first and get a discount if I choose to buy.
