on every minecraft server ive ever been on people just spawn all the poo poo for their projects

That's creative mode.  We have a couple of people who play in that mode, but it's an executive decision.

yeah no spawning, although some people started to abuse that a little bit when the map was getting stale

I'm going to test a few seeds in single player and see what I think of them.  This looks like the best shop thing for our uses I have been able to find:

Note that this covers a huge area (around 6000 across, 4000 vertically).  I would want the spawn to be on the desert/forest island a little bit above and to the left of the center point (the island with the village).  Any objections?

Some information on which biome is which:

Topmost star: On desert, island to the left is desert/forest.  Island above is taiga.  To the lower right is jungle.

Middle star island: On plains, little bit of forest

Bottom left: On plains, jungle below, taiga further inland.

Bottom center: On plains, extreme hills below, taiga left, swamp above

Bottom right:  On plains, forest nearby, extreme hills and taiga inland.  The island to the above and left of that is a jungle island.  Jungle below.

i think i like the one on land at the bottom right just so we don't all cramp ourselves together on an island, otherwise i would say the top one is cool

That middle one is perfect if we can build bridges from it to create a nexus point of some type.

I'm not asking where a town would be, just the spawn. Everyone can go from there
