You might want to convert it from the original because when you convert something from high quality to low quality (like 24-bit with partial transparency to 8-bit with no partial transparency) that's why the images end up looking crappy in gif, you end up loosing data so you'd still have low quality when you convert it back, you might be able to fix it with a little photoshoping depending on the image.
