I'm not the least bit surprised.  Gamers like to crow about DRM driving piracy and how inside everyone is a saintly consumer who would faithfully buy games if only the evil publishers would stop locking innocent gamers out, but the fact is the majority of the market is composed of poo pooheads who would gladly steal everything not nailed down if there were no consequences.  People use Steam because it's easier than torrenting, and if you put in a way to basically steal games on there, people are going to do it.
