lol yea it's like that for every release. 12-year-olds don't like to be behind and don't like to wait.
also I linked reddit to my guide on installing the mods here, I hope that's okay.

No, the world will stay. I won't reset it unless it's nearly unanimous.
Kentoss, do you know of a program that can delete large areas of the map easily? We could trim to half the size without losing anything.
I'm pretty sure MCEdit or World Edit will do this. It would be good to regenerate areas to get the new biome features

I'd say wait for beta. Are you going to reset the world? If so I wanna back up my home first

That's sweet! I'm working on a library/train station near my house that I'm gonna use as a prototype for a larger train station thing

my dad unexpectedly dropped by my apartment while I was waiting for skeletons to fall into my trap. i forgot i had minecraft running. fast forward 3 hours i get back and minecraft has crashed due to running out of memory. I log back on and immediately encounter lag. I managed to get this screenshot before activating my death trap to murder them all:

All of those are skeletons. So many skeletons.

i get bored of minecraft after a while, finding new mods and new ways to make it objectively look better keeps me interested. i just like having immersion and atmosphere.
here's how I went about jamming all that stuff into minecraft (I don't use any automated mod installers aside from what the mod download page gives me)
- Start with clean minecraft.jar
- install modloader
- install the latest Optifine (any version, I prefer multicore + smooth, the AA one isn't needed because you can force those features using an nvidia graphics card)
- run minecraft, start any game or multiplayer, go to Options > Video Settings > Quality and turn ON custom colors (this is important so your shit doesn't look all blown out)
- install SEUS (link here)
- Download the modified V10 RC2 shaders from here
- Open minecraft.jar, and replace all shaders in the ./shaders directory with the ones from above
- Download John Smith modified from here
- Install to textures folder
- Download MCPatcher from here
- (Optional) Download Dynamic Lights (MCPatcher version) from here (this lets hand-held torches, mobs lit on fire, and items dropped on the ground to emit light)
- Follow the instructions until you are ready to install the checked mods from the MCPatcher list
- ONLY check Better Lights (Optifine version) and Better skies, the others will conflict with Optifine and mess things up
- Click to install or patch MC or whatever it says
If done correctly it should all be working the same way I have it. For an added bonus, install MAtmos and MSI to make minecraft sound a lot better, too.
NOTE: for as long as you have the shaders installed, you can only use SEUS-enabled texture packs, due to the way the shaders handle water and lighting. If you switch to another texture pack that doesn't have SEUS support it will look awful.

I'm using a heavily modified John Smith texture pack, and I have the following mods installed:
- Modloader
- Optifine HD (Multicore + AA)
- Better Skies
- Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders v10 RC2 w/ modified composite.fsh
- Dynamic Lights
Better Skies is an MCPatcher mod that allows you to fuck with the skybox using custom texture parameters. I modified the John Smith one to include extra cloud layers and a more detailed night sky. I also modified the texture pack to make different biomes have different colors, as well as reduced how intense torchlight was when the shaders mod is installed.
