Why, when, and how did humanity leave Earth?

I feel bothered by what vaguely resembles a recent proliferation of politically-motivated and even grammatically questionable question-statements, rhetorical or otherwise, on the World-Wide Web. I see this in advertising, opinion pieces, and casual discussion. I will cite two examples: The Nostalgia Critic and a forum thread about the "free software foundation".

This is nothing short of propaganda. By asking a question, the asker is forcing the reader to think about it and come up with an answer. I will just be taking my sweet time enjoying myself on the Internet when out of the blue a banner ad will appear with a picture of Obama and the caption, "Gun control? Yes/No". I'm not filling out a public opinion survey! This is the Internet, land of the free! Surely the sponsor can market their Viagra in a less intrusive way. Any time you ask a question, my answer will always be "I don't care," and by asking the question you are not making me care, you are making me mad.

The program crashed for some reason, then I restarted it, and I heard this commercial advertising vitamins but there was no banner ad to be found. Might this have something to do with Microsoft's recent purchase of Skype and subliminal advertising programs?

It had something to do with World War I never ending in an alternate timeline and some guy discovering this continent in the future that was supposed to be Europe after it was destroyed. There were tribespeople who used some mangled form of English in which guns were called "bang sticks" and women were called "shes". It was sort of like The Land That Time Forgot or The Lost World or something. I don't know who it was written by, but I'm pretty sure it was published around World War I. Any help in finding it would be appreciated.
