What's a good Linux distro for kids (or other tech-illiterate people)?

OK I've been using openSUSE 13.1 for a few days now and here's my great review:

REVIEW: openSUSE is a great distro for beginners and advanced users alike!

This is a distro you can take to your local LUG (Linux Users Group) without the fat neckbeards laughing at you!

Installation was simple enough. The partitioner was a little unintuitive, but as long as you stick with the suggested defaults you will probably be fine! During installation you have the choice of KDE or GNOME desktop (both equally supported!). I prefer KDE because I think it's a little more Windows-like and has a better apps ecosystem (Kate, KTorrent, Krita, Amarok, K3B, Dolphin, etc).  I also find it to be much faster than Gnome 3, Unity, and other forks. It runs great on my 6 year old desktop (with 3d effects turned off) and I've also seen it run great on slow ARM boards like the Improv and chinatabs, too!

openSUSE fans say that openSUSE has the best KDE implementation around. IDK about that I think I prefer it when distros just ship it how it is without fetching with it too much. openSUSE does have a very nice theme though, very polished!

openSUSE uses YaST for package management. It is a little bit on the technical side (more similar to Synaptic than Software Center), but still a very good package manager!

There is also a web-based software portal over at http://software.opensuse.org where you can install software from the official or unofficial repos using one-click installers. This is very nice compared to Ubuntu and derivatives, where to install from an unofficial source you need to add a PPA, which takes a terminal command like "sudo apt-add-repository ppa:<ppa>" or messing around in the software center options.

There is also a command line package manager called zypper, which I haven't had to use directly because the other 2 are so good!

Most system configuration can be done through the YaST Control Center, which is really nice! When I had to open some ports in my firewall for KDEConnect, YaST let me do it with EASE:

I haven't had to use the terminal or hand edit a config file once yet!

Well, I have to cut my review short now because it's time for my shave. Have a nice day!

UP NEXT: Mageia

How do you edit your autoexec.bat and config.sys in this distro?  :belair:

Just installed Mageia, wow this is very nice!

Mageia is the continuation of Mandriva, a popular distro that was more friendly than Ubuntu back in the day.
IMO, the only reason Ubuntu became more popular is because they sent out free CDs through the mail.

After you install this is what you're greeted with:

Everything you need right here:

But I wouldn't recommend this distro for a 10 year old because look what's in the app store!

I'll post screenshots of this naughty app a little later  :pika:

Maybe I'll get that distro for myself then...

I'm disappointed. I expected some surreal 3D rendering. Does she ever show her vagina?

I don't think so. It's a pretty crap app, honestly. IDK why the Mageia developers would even package it!
