For the last few years, there has been a rising trend in gaming, most specifically game's graphics: Lens flare (and other crap effects like blur and depth of field). The logical explanation for this would be the aging (now last-gen) consoles. Since devs can't no longer squeeze more juice out of them, they just cram the visuals full of the aforementioned effects in an attempt to look "next-gen" and then it eventually just became something that you should do, regardless of hardware limitations.

But now they've done it. It reached critical mass. We can't no longer tell if they still think this poo poo looks good or if they're just fetching with us for laughs (it IS April 1st after all).
