yeah but people fall for that fantasy all the time, and I think it's been pretty baked into our culture since the noble savage narratives of the Enlightenment.  it's just so easy to think that modern society is somehow unnatural, I'd be happier on the steppes hunting my meals and engaging in occasional honorable combat, etc etc

I've been doing my damnedest to finish English Wayfaring Life since Cirus asked me for it after I'm done.  It's great for so many reasons: interesting content, a fun mix of modern english, middle english, latin and french, and such a strange mix of anecdotes from the 1400s, 1800s (when the book was first published), and the 1920s (from later editions).  automobiles didn't exist when it first came out, and some of the fairs from medieval times still existed at that point, so the author has a foot in modernity and the other in antiquity.  I'm getting there.
