The first thing I would do is find a good tea shop (I suggest using Yelp).  Ideally, the staff will be knowledgeable and can give you some more info about what a good tea is for a beginner (generally something mild).  Gunpowder is a pretty light flavor, but it's still green tea and can be a little bitter.  If you have any friends who know a lot about tea you could ask them too.

I rarely drink tea, when I do its usually with sugar and at someone elses's house so I just drink any brand being offered

Personally don't care much for tea.
It's not for everyone. But I firmly believe that tea drinkers and non-tea drinkers can mutually respect one another even if tea plays a different part in their respective lives.

Had genmaicha, not my favorite but it grew on me.  I hadn't drank tea for a while so I was not prepared for green tea goodness.

Also had pu-erh, that was very good.
