Valve teases something Big Picture-related

Goddamnit, and I just got rid of Linux.

What major benefits does this have over just running Steam in Windows? Apparently the OS is better optimized for gaming, but you also won't be able to play the many Windows-only games unless you want to stream them (which I don't).

I think at first the major benefits will be for Valve and the hardware manufacturers. Valve no longer has to worry about Microsoft being  and blocking competing app stores like Steam and making everything go through Windows Store. And hardware manufacturers will have an open platform they can use to compete against Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft!! It's much like the Android strategy, where Google gave hardware manufacturers an open platform to compete with iOS. That strategy works extremely well, because one company can't possibly be more innovative than everyone else COMBINED!!!

Or, if you're interested in an alternative gaming platform which is also very nice, check out @EJ 's PS4 gaming blog

They should rename Steam OS STEEM in honor of Steev!

If Microsoft were stupid enough to block shops like Steam and iTunes on Windows, there would be a huge backlash. I don't think they would ever do it. And it's gonna take years before most devs begin to fully support Linux. It just doesn't seem like there's much reason to use SteamOS...yet.

It's already impossible to do a Steam app for Windows 8 Metro because of stupid restrictions Microsoft has put in place.
If that's really the future of Windows like MS says then Steam is scroogled.

I don't think it is but I just want Windows to die

But everything that's offered by it can be done in another way already. Only stupid/lazy (or lazy stupid) people will buy into this.
