BILSKIRNIR - ATAVISMUS DES GLAUBENS

Atavismus des Glaubens is an album produced by legendary one-man band Bilskirnir. Bilskirnir refers to Thor's hall, an allusion to Wodenism and Indo-European paganism.

The album starts off with a gnarly instrumental song titled Feur und Schwert which translates to "Fire and Sword" in English. The first song transitions well into the second  Atavismus des Glauben. This might possibly be the most hateful, misanthropic, and ethnocentric song I have ever heard. The title translates to "Belief in Atavism" in English. Atavism of course refers to animalistic traits apparent in human embryos, and early scientific racists used Atavism to support their views. The song itself is as hateful as the title, every time I listen to the song, I want to unleash my Aryan genius. The screams are brutal and angry. The third song By Fire, Midgard Shall Be Cleansed is an obvious allusion to Norse mythology. Again, Bilskirnir expresses pure hatred through music. The guitar in this song is downright brutal. The next song is Restitution which is a really generic black metal song with solid vocals, guitar, and drums. This is the weakest song in the album, but is still fairly brvtal. The song leaps into the next song The Cosmic Source this song is so raw and so wickedly outstanding. It has a melancholy melody with the brvtal screams of Bilskirnir, a very hateful experience indeed. The next song Einsamkeit which translates to "Loneliness" in English has the same brvtal screams and raw feel to it. The song is not as misanthropic and the melody even gives a hint of hope in this chaotic album. This of course shows the depth of Bilskirnir's emotional character. The last song Abschied is so melancholy and brvtal it's ridiculous. Such a fantastic way to end a fantastic album. I won't spoil the end but just know it is sick!!

I won't give this album a rating as that would contradict the ideology that Bilskirnir is trying to espouse. He is an out-and-out National Socialist and German Transcendentalist, and from this brilliant work you know that Bilskirnir rejects empiricism. His album is far to deep and misanthropic to be quantified.

this review is super right, bilskirnir is amazzzzin

I'll do the biggie.

This was a huge letdown. After reading about early Norwegian black metal I downloaded all of the Burzum albums that were black metal and not weird synth crap, since Varg Vikernes is just too brutal, and I really liked them. Figured, so many people died in the making of this album it must be good right?

Wrong. Instrumentation is cool and heavy, but vocals suck butt. The album is sung in english, how gay is that? Lyrics were totally abysmal and sounded pretty goofy with the delivery. Could have been a lot better with a different vocalist + language.

But still, the first vocalist killed himself and the bassist stabbed the guitarist to death. That definitely earns it some brownie points

Are you kidding me? Per Yengve Ohlin was a fantastic vocalist. Mayhem died with Ohlin's shotgun blast

Are you kidding me? Per Yengve Ohlin was a fantastic vocalist. Mayhem died with Ohlin's shotgun blast

Maybe, are there any studio recordings with him though? Recorded live music sucks cocks : /

And I'd say Euronymous was way more important to the band but again, all this poo poo was 19 years ago and none of our opinions are valid

I like De Mysteriis but I imagine it would have been totally amazing with Dead on vocals.

Folkvang - Atmospheric Black (2009)

I first heard Folkvang on their split with Wodensthrone which I believe is one of the finer splits I have heard in my time (I may have to do a review on it in the future).  I researched the band a little and heard people raving about their third album Atmospheric Black so I decided to get it.

I have listened to this album at least 20 times and it still sounds as fresh to me as it did the first time.  As the title suggests it is atmospheric black metal.  It is raw and bleak but nothing harsh, and it has some progressive and interesting atmospheric elements as well.  The album has some moments where it sounds more like brutal old-school black metal and some moments where it is more like Summoning.  The music has a lot of layers and the vocals are pretty solid as well, so everything flows nicely and there aren't any empty moments.  If I had to pick a negative, it's that the album is only 40 minutes.

The band doesn't advance the black metal genre but it certainly puts out one of the better releases from recent years. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys atmospheric black metal. :headbang:

Altorių Å eÅ¡ėliai - Margi Sakalai (2007)

This has been one of my favorite albums ever since I found it so I figured I should write a great review on it.  First off this is another pussy atmospheric black metal release, but I am going to review it ANYWAY.

This is a one man band from Lithuania and everything on the album sounds like nature or living in the Lithuanian forests or whatever they have there.  The styles of the songs are pretty varied as far as black metal goes, with some being having more traditional black metal riffs while others have a minimalistic approach. The beginning and end of each song has samples of nature sounds (thunder, birds, rivers, etc) that somehow manage not to sound totally generic and lame like they do on most other albums in this genre.  There are also some classical instruments (flute in particular) on the album which makes it a bit more interesting and allows for a greater variety.  The vocals are pretty low and growling and don't stand out very much from the music, which in this case is a good thing.

Overall this is a mellow album but that doesn't mean that it is any less grim than your average black metal album.  The album clocks in at about 46:30, the standard length for an album like this.  Not only can you still feel miserable from listening to this, but you can hear enough of nature to never leave your computer for the next month.  Over 100,000 plays on last.fm but less than 2,500 listeners and as this is the only full-length release from this guy, I think that is pretty indicative of how good it is.

The best song is Gelsvas mėnuo III.
