I was bored one day so I put a copy of nfs 2 for ps1 into my 160gb ps3 slim for lolz, bit it turns out, the ps3 slim plays ps1 games. So, in my excitement I went and grabbed a copy of burnout 2 for ps2, put it in aaaaand "this model of the ps3 system is not compatible with playstation 2 format software" WTF SONY?

The first generation of PS3s had the emotion engine built in so they could play PS2 games, but to reduce costs they undid that in successive generations.  PS2 emulation isn't easy, especially on almost 6 year old hardware, so they aren't doing that either.
