Actually, I read somewhere that the developers were running out of time and money while developing Episode 5 so who knows what the ending was originally supposed to be!

Hopefully they won't run into those problems with the sequel.

I can't find the source but from what I remember the ending itself never changed but what happened was they couldn't polish it as much as they would have liked to.
