I know a couple of people have it and I've been interested in it ever since it was announced but didn't want to drop $30 on it.  Can anyone share some insight?

Not yet.

EDIT: According to the Steam forums it's a fairly playable game that is riddled with bugs--what you would expect from an alpha.  Not close to completion as of now.

Honest: After spending 2 hours on a prison you have nothing left to do at this state of the game. But it is fun for those two hours once or twice.
