bjorno learns sketchup!!

I want to build a simple toolchest outta some wood and since i'm a big idiot i decided I needed to create some CAD drawings ahead of time.
I have experience with autocad, solidworks and probably a third thing, but I didnt want to download those awful bloated programs so I'm giving sketchup a try!
In order to extend the learning process (and to give myself a reason not to give up immediately) I will be keeping track of this learning process and web logging my design and build process.
Thank you.

I have downloaded and installed sketchup.
The toolchest will consist of 4 sliding drawers of two sizes: 3x4" depth and 1x6" depth.
i dont want to spend money on poo poo like drawer rails so I will use another method which will be detailed when I manage to get that far.

Step 1: draw bottom plate of chest. This plate will be a rectangle of 18"x26" dimension with a couple of locating holes for dowels (DOWELS ARE GODLY)

This picture looks right, but I figured out that unlike solidworks the dimension are not driving! what fetching bullpoo poo fetch this

I'm trying to find how to add a grid or snap options but everything thats listed on the official help screen doesnt seem to be where they say it is??? fetch this again

okay, apparently contrary to the listed directions for using the rectangle tool, if you want to use exact dimensions you have to type them in the middle of the two defining clicks and it is impossible to edit them after. fetch that x3

I have now correct drawn a single properly dimensioned rectangle. HOORAY

Up next: make 3DD

Using the PUSH-PULL tool (hotkey P for pluto) and the same dimensioning technique as before I extrude the rectangle into a 3/4" thick plank. The piece is 3/4" because I will be using (probably) 3/4" MDF as the primary material in this build because of its economical price and ease of modification (cut, drill, paint).

At this point, if I was using something like solidworks I would save this part and create a separate assembly drawing where I could combine assemblies together while keeping the individual parts on their own.
I am looking into if I can do that here or if I have to create everything in the same file.
So far this is much worse than just me drawing everything by hand. I dont know why I'm not just doing that.

There should be a command line, frick this.

I found a "create component" command which might be what I want?

I have created a left-side section.

i will now see If i can create and move parts (I will want to do this with the drawer assemblies).

This is a test drawer (not properly component'd or dimension'd).

i was able to select the new drawer component and move it to where it needed to be very easily.
I am changing my mind, I no longer hate sketchup.

Next up: Proper drawers!

I am creating the 4 drawer assemblies.
The drawers will slide along 0.5" tall and 0.5" wide rails to be installed on the side panels. The sides of the drawers will have a notch created from 3 pieces of 1/2 and 3/4" MDF.
Easy to see here:

Top drawer done:

I quite like sketchup now?? The relative dimensioning when drawing on surfaces is pretty cool, I guess.

I copied the original drawer 4 times with the move tool and the CTRL key.

Will now attempt to modify each drawer.

Now I will copy each drawer and stack them on the bottom plate.

The mating of components isnt as I would like.

look who came to help!

heres a side panel!

This is an approximate final assembly. The side panels need to be redrawn and the mating needs correction before final drawings can be produced, but it looks at intended.

The drawing tools are okay, but I have not found a way I like to do assembly/mating of components.

Next up: those things I said

I gave up on doing proper assembly drawings cuz thats not what sketchups about???

I finished this all like a month ago, so I am going by memory (bad, ruined by poppers).

I went with my pal big willy to the home depot and bought WOOD.

I picked up some number of 2x4s, a 6'x8' of both 3/4" and 1/2" PLYWOOD (mdf too rich for my blood, apparently).
I dont remember if I got like screws and poo poo at this point???
I also forgot to take good photos of anything.

This is an awful blurry picture of the bottom of one of the drawers being cut:

I built the first drawer as per the drawings, and test fit a big torque wrench.

Aint she a beaut!!

I then cut the pieces for the other 3 drawers and stacked them next to this classic car

Two drawers built, checking if they are close enough:

bonus shot of the skateboard I can't ride (is that the correct term???)
I should mention at this point I don't have like a table saw or any way to cut things actually straight so everything is kinda "off".

All drawers built and stacked, testing the side and top panels for fit (with NATURAL LIGHT coming through the open garage)

This is starting to look right. (Y)

I apparently didnt take any photos for the rest of the outside of the chest being built and the rails being fit, but I assure you it was exciting.
Here is everything built and being painted!!

And everything dry and FULL OF TOOLS

Everything looks like the drawing (PLUS HANDY HANDLES) so I guess that's good???

What should I do with all my extra wood???

That's pretty cool, just like my grandpa. One time he made me a bed frame.  Can you put skateboard wheels on it?
