Am I actually excited about the Nintendo Switch?

Lately, a lot of people have been asking that. Basically I'm not sure yet. It depends on a lot of things....

Here's my questions:

1. Is it the true successor of 3DS, or will Nintendo release an upgraded *DS (which would be cool if they did)???

I LOVE all Nintendo handhelds and if Switch is the true successor to 3DS then I want it, but I'm not ENTIRELY convinced that it really is. Looks kind of big to be portable and it's also trying to be a home console, which is something idgaf about..... Also the loss of dual-screens and touch seems like a huge regression to me. These allowed for many innovations such dynamic on-screen buttons or maps that didn't get in your way, also games like WarioWare just used them in cool and crazy ways. I think this was before iPhone made touchscreen smartphones standard, so as usual Nintendo was just way ahead of the times....

2. Will it get hacked????

If hacked, Nintendo switch is probably the best emulation handheld ever made.  If you want an emulation handheld your choices right now are basically:

* Pandora/Pyra - old hardware, bad build quality, expensive
* GPD Win - x86/runs Windows
* Hacked 3DS or Vita - weak hardware, non-standard graphics APIs make it harder to port over emulators like Mupen64plus/Dolphin/PPSSPP
* Android devices - no physical buttons, unpredictable latency

Nintendo Switch:
* Powerful handheld
* Superior Nintendo build quality
* Tegra GPU should easily handle the best CRT shaders
* Probably powerful enough for good SNES emulation (Maybe even bsnes/bsnes-mercury?)
* Full OpenGL/Vulkan support
* Dolphin/Vulkan can potentially run well???

3. Will Nintendo be friendly to indies???

This is the biggest question. Switch probably won't get a lot of AAA 3rd-party support (who cares), which leaves first party titles and indies. A lot of my favorite indie devs are already drooling over Nintendo Switch. Ethan Lee (porter of many Mac/Linux games), Lars  ??? (dev of Defender's Quest), etc. But will Nintendo allow them to sell their games on the eShop. Who knows?

Hope we can get some of those questions answered tomorrow during the presentation.

Thanks for reading!!

7:08PM added a note about AAA 3rd party support (who cares)

It honestly pissed me off that so many people were excited about Skyrim in the Switch reveal trailer (i suspect it was just some nvidia gamestream  thing anyway). Seriously I'd rather play any Atlus or Capcom game than Skyrim

Thank you for reading

No, I just got a 2ds. It would be financial suicide to switch to a Switch already. Plus it will be pretty much impossible to even get one for like the first year since Nintendo likes to create artificial demand.....

But that doesn't mean I can't tune in to the Switch presentation tonight at 8PM PST

See ya there!

Japan dev hints at a unique switch feature we don't know about yet. I wonder what it is?

OK here's what I remember (maybe DZ and ZIGS can fill in some details i missed)

Suggested Retail Price: $299.99

3-6 hour battery depending on usage

Online multiplayer will cost money, SMH...

Local multiplayer with up to 8 Switch consoles

NO REGION LOCKING

Only 2 product configurations I think,

Both include:
1x Nintendo Switch
1x Switch Dock
1x HDMI cable
1x power supply
2x joycons
1x switch grip that turns the joycons into a classic controller
2x joycon wrist straps

The only difference with the other config is it includes red & blue joycons

Each joycon is a fully functional controller, so you essentially get 2 CONTROLLERS IN ONE, which is actually my favorite thing about this console.

The joycons support motion control and advanced HD haptics that can simulate up to 3 ice cubes inside of the controller

They joycons can also READ AND WRITE amiibo data

THE GAMES:

1-2 Switch: Some mini games to be played with JUST the joycons. You don't have to look at the screen, instead you'll be looking into your friend's eyes. They showed dueling, sword fighting, etc.
Looks great for parties

ARMS: Very competitive boxing game with motion controls. THE TWIST:  You have very long arms that can punch your opponent from very far away.
The guy described it as "boxing and shooting in one". I think this can become a big e-sport

Splatoon 2: Same as old one just with more weapons, etc

Skyrim: smh

New FIFA game

Mario Odyssey: Open-world  sandbox Mario game with brand new environments like New York City. Also, your hat has googly eyes for some reason

Xenoblade 2

Fire Emblem Warriors

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild

Square Enix & Atlus announced something too, but i forget what

Only 1-2 Switch and LoZ are launch titles I think
