Everyone here knows that I am a big fan of Mgła.  Mdłości, Further Down the Nest and Presence were all great releases.  Unfortunately, his first full length album Groza (2008) was lacking and seemed bland by comparison.  Granted it was still much better than most of the stuff put out then, it was a relative disappointment.  Fast forward 4 years and M.'s newest release has finally hit the scene and it DOES NOT DISAPPOINT.

The first thing to notice is that the production has "progressed" to something like an early metal sound rather than how raw the older releases were.  The sound is very clear but still gritty, which is about as progressive as you can be when it comes to producing BM.  The album has a fairly distinct atmosphere and feel to it.  There is no single instrument that stands out above the rest (i.e. no death bass or screeching guitars).

The album is actually rather melodic, something that I wasn't expecting at all.  It's nothing like Vinterland or Sacramentum by any means but it's not just face-blasting orthodox black metal either.  The melodies can be absolutely incredible, as in the track "III" which I will post at the bottom of this post.  Unlike a lot of black metal you can tell that a lot of time and effort went into crafting something that has its own unique sound and melodies instead of just using the guise of being trve.  It's a very complex and dense album and you will notice new things each time you listen to it.  The lyrics are not traditional Christian-killing rants but theistic Satanic stuff which is still pretty cool.  For the genre, it's a pretty slow album but that is not a problem.

The best way I can describe this album is that it's a good gateway for regular metalheads looking to expand their tastes.  This is a black metal album that is not only a gem within its own genre, but within all of metal.  I would recommend this to anyone who wants to give black metal a listen and get an idea for what the genre can really put out.  For those familiar with the genre: it reminds me of a progression from early Deathspell Omega, especially the Manifestations 2002 album.

Hello friends!  The new Mgła album has leaked.  I can't wait to listen to it!!  Everybody knows Mgła is one of the best black metal bands out there, and this album seems like it won't disappoint.  Based on what I've heard so far, it sounds more like pre-Groza Mgła which I must say is a welcome choice.  Here's a song from the album:
