If you have X-Com Enemy Unknown on Steam you now have free access to the Evolve alpha. You play as one of four soldier classes (medic, assault, etc.) or as the Goliath, a beast that has to "evolve" by consuming other creatures around the world while avoiding or killing the soldiers (There is another class of monster -- the Kraken, which can fly -- but I haven't unlocked it yet).  The soldiers' goal is to kill the Goliath, while the goal of the Goliath is to evolve twice so it can be powerful enough to destroy a generator in the world map or kill the soldiers.  As the Goliath moves, attacks other monsters, or otherwise disturbs the environment, it leaves around debris for the soldiers to track it down.  There may be some way for one of the classes to track it from far away.  I've only played as the Medic and Assault classes, and I like the medic because the game gives her more power than in other video games.  In addition to having the traditional medic gun, the medic has a tranquilizer gun that slows down and leaves a tracking marker on the Goliath, and a sniper rifle that sets up weak points on the Goliath for the other players to shoot down.  I saw other classes that had hook guns and could deploy domes to enclose the Goliath to prevent it from running away.  I also saw one class that either was able to control a small pet in addition to the soldier or was the pet itself.  All the classes are also equipped with a jetpack to move around the environment better.

The Goliath is pretty fast, agile, can climb most rock and man-made structures, and has several attacks including a flame blast, rock throw, leap smash, and a charge.  At the beginning of the game you can only spend three points among these attacks, so it's possible to spend all your points in one type of attack.  As you evolve you get three more points to spend in the same way.  There is also an additional perk system (e.g. +30% to feeding speed), but I didn't notice a significant difference when I had one of these perks selected.

At the end of the game, you are shown a minimap with a replay of the player's movements across the world.  It's very telling when all the games I have played show the same pattern -- everyone running around in circles alongside the outer edges and ignoring 80% of the rest of the map.  Right now the game by itself is ok, but I think to maximize fun you definitely have to play with at least 2 friends, but preferably 3 or more.  As a soldier it can get boring just running around the map in circles searching for the Goliath, especially if the Goliath player knows what he is doing and just crouches (which leaves no footprints) and uses sneak attacks all the time (which doesn't disturb the environment enough to send signals to the other players).  I was able to evolve to a Level 3 Goliath during my second game play just doing this before encountering any soldiers. Since I maxed out charge with my 3 points, by the time they spotted me as Level 3 Goliath I was able to easily run away and get close to the generator through a combination of charges and long leaps.  Also, it is almost impossible to kill a Level 3 Goliath without great coordination, and even then he might be too powerful anyways.  Frankly, I just button mashed my standard melee attack 90% of the time and killed everyone.  You can even do this as  Level 1 Goliath and still have a good chance of winning.

Overall, the game has some interesting concepts, but their execution is pretty standard.  I might enjoy it more if people here played.  Evolve is being developed by studio behind Left 4 Dead, so I have have (had?) high hopes for this one.  Some pictures I took:

If you had gotten an XCOM key from that Golden Joysticks poll, then you've basically got free alpha access, period.

what a scroogle

they just wanted free alpha testers but they didn't even let Linux gamers participate who are very good at finding and reporting bugs!!

Now the alpha is over and just like "Thanks for the help guys, fetch you!!"
