A lot of you have probably noticed this game recently because it is getting a ton of hype.  I've been playing since it came out and I can tell you that the game is as good as all of the hype would suggest.  This is the best city building game I have played since SimCity 4.  My favorite thing about the game is how lively the city feels.  Basically it's everything SimCity was supposed to be.  Traffic flow is fetching hard and so I am constantly ending up with traffic jams everywhere.  This game only costs $30 but it feels so much more polished than almost all new games.

The game also has workshop support which allows you to share things like traffic intersections that super geniuses have made already.  The devs are incredibly active and have been closely involved with the community at every point so far.  I can't recommend it enough.

Here are some screenshots of my first poo pooty town:

You can currently get it at GMG for $21.89: http://www.greenmangaming.com/vip/

Yeah i've seen this game on Steam, not got it yet.

Do you build on a square grid as usual?  How does it differ from SimCity 4?

Regarding city size... You start off with a 2km x 2km tile which is the same size as Simcity 5. As your city grows you can purchase additional tiles. There are 25 tiles on a 5x5 grid on the map, but by default you can only unlock up to 9 total. This means your city doesn't just have to be a square, which is neat. There are mods to allow you to purchase all 25 already if you so desire but I haven't played enough to want to do that.

The game is vastly different than SC4 so I'll just mention a couple of things I really like about CS.

The first is the incredible road system. You have an unbelievable amount of control over roads and traffic flow in the game so you can really make the city look and feel however you want. That also means that it's easy to make terrible roads but that's just part of the fun. Look up screenshots online for some of the work people have done with roads already in this game.

The agent system is also really cool and allows you to follow someone as they go to work, go shopping, drive home or anything else. The pathfinding is pretty smart from what I've seen and is worlds better than the Simcity's godawful system on release. You really have to think about your city layout which wasn't really necessary in SC4. Think of it this way: SC4 was a game, this is a simulation.

One thing I don't like is a lack of data visualization. For example, you can't easily see why traffic is slow like you could with the route query tool in SC4. I assume this will come at some point.

Finally, the dev team listens to the community closely and has been pretty transparent so far. There are a lot of features planned already.

Can you sell municipal bonds?  Can you borrow money from a foreign government?

is Cities in Motion 2 from the same dev any good?  I have it, but the ratings are "mixed"

fetching hell.  This is ridiculously addictive.  I had to think for a while to remember if i'd eaten any dinner.

After two bad starts learning the basic mechanics, I started a small town on the first map, built a medium-sized commercial district, 3 coal power plants.  I've bought two extra sections of land to get at a large oil resource, next plan is to build a poo pooload of industry on top of it.

10/10

Steam Cloud sucks.  OK, screenshots.  I've not designed the city in a fancy, arty way, more like a Judge Dredd MegaCity kind of way with large square hab blocks and a lot of industry and commercial zones.  There's already loads of mods out, i'm currently using automatic bulldoze, infinite oil and ore (it's not infinite they do eventually run out, just lasts much longer than the half-hour it lasts in the vanilla game), and extended public transport ui (not tried it yet).

fetch off Rosemary

The oil fields stretch for miles

Crazy road network connects the oil fields to the west side of the city

West Side

One of the commercial districts.  You can make out fuzzy bits of the city through the reflection in the building's windows.

Tasty Noodles.  Switching on the "big business" policy basically doubles my city income, though for some reason the industry version does very little for me despite the massive industry i've got.
