Can someone explain how one uses Grub to bootstrap ones self?

Usually it's installed when you install your distro, and pretty much every time it's installed normally it already even picks up old installations of windows and makes them accessible as dual-boot.

Svetlana is right, every distro I've used has installed it and had no problem picking up Windows

I googled it it didn't work and i'm not sure what a bootstrap is, thanks though.
