Hello Linux gamers, welcome to my blog about Steambox/SteamOS

Steambox/SteamOS is an upcoming platform that I am very excited about! It combines the openness and innovation of PC gaming with a game console-like user experience.
It is built around Steam's Big Picture Mode and the world's most advanced operating system, Linux! You will have many choices when it comes to Steambox hardware.

you will also be able to build your own Steambox thanks to the openness of the platform

But what about games? Linux has no games right? WRONG
Steam for Linux already has over 200 games and Valve says that many AAA game developers are getting on board!!

GTA V on Steambox? LIKELY!!

Valve has 2 more announcements coming this week so STAY TUNED

Hi EJ, great questions

It is basically a game console, but more similar to a gaming PC. Like a game console it is designed for living room gaming with your best friends. Just hook it up to your TV, turn it on, grab a gamepad, sit on the couch, and GAME ON. But unlike a game console the hardware can be upgraded and the software can be changed.

"SteamOS" is a Linux-based operating system optimized for gaming on TV screens. I see this as the Android of gaming (more on that later)

And "SteamBox" (official name still unknown) refers to any hardware running SteamOS. There will be more than one "SteamBox," Valve is going to allow any hardware manufacturer - Dell, HP, Asus, WHOEVER - to build SteamBox hardware, as long as they meet some baseline hardware requirements to ensure that SteamOS-optimized games will run properly. This is similar to what Google did for cell phone manufacturers with Android. Valve will also be making their own SteamBox hardware (similar what Google does with their "Nexus" phones). And of course you will be able to install SteamOS on your current gaming PC and make your own SteamBox!!

Valve has another announcement to make tomorrow. I think they will reveal some SteamBox hardware. They're also supposed to be revealing which AAA game titles will be coming to SteamOS in 2014, let's hope that it is competitive with PS4 and XBone's lineup!

Thank you Steev for that in-depth explanation. I feel like I now know all that there is to know about the SteamOS/Steambox  (Y)

What if someone used a mobile x86 chip like the new Atoms* to make a Gabe Boy?

*I'm pretty sure the SteamBox setup does not prohibit Intel chips, even if they are not used in the reference design.

Steevstradamus, what are you're predictions for the third announcement?

@Classic Meepington, I hope the third announcement is about games.
I'm really excited to hear about the AAA titles coming to SteamOS in 2014!!

I hope developers treat this thing like a game console and not a gaming PC. SteamOS games should be designed for gamepads, because nobody wants to use a stupid keyboard/mouse in front of the TV!! They should also have split-screen multiplayer so you can play with your closest friends...

Valve can throw around their influence enough to really push this, I can't see it being a failure.  They have already pushed a lot of influence for controllers already and you see a lot of titles supporting them natively.
