Windows 7 will be like XP and W8 like Vista, imo

What an original and refreshing idea >>>>>>>>>Vista is fine, XP is poo poo club<<<<<<<<<<<<<

There wasn't anything wrong with Vista once they patched it a few months after release but it always suffered from a bad reputation after that.

:bump: finally got around to swapping the hard drive in my netbook (and breaking most of the tabs holding the touchpad in), installing win8 on an old spare hard drive

will report my experience

Still running it.

Shutting down is a pain in the ass.

QUICKEST METHOD:
1. Press Windows key+i
2. Click Power
3. Click Shutdown

ALTERNATIVE METHOD:
1. Move mouse to top-right corner of the screen
2. Move it down
3. Click Settings
4. Click Power
5. Click Shutdown

yeah that's pretty dumb

I also don't get why there's that bit of blank space on the left side of the taskbar where the Start button used to be, it's like they're taunting anyone who wants to use it.

There wasn't anything wrong with Vista once they patched it a few months after release but it always suffered from a bad reputation after that.

The drivers support was shakey for a good while.  But, the most insulting part of Vista is the really slow I/O from the GUI.  Trying to move around on my wife's laptop to delete files or move any around and poo poo with the GUI is unicorning atrocious.  Using the command prompt to do it is instantaneous, like it should be.  This got me so pissed off when I tested for the closed Vista beta that I stopped being a fanboi.  There was a huge flames on their private newsgroups back then about how all the bugs related to the issue were getting closed as non-repro, even though just about everybody was having this problem.  Even 7 still exhibits some of this, but it's not as bad as Vista.

tl;dr/dc(don't care): microsoft was trying to just finish up vista, so they ignored a lot of serious issues regarding I/O from the GUI.

is that why when transferring a file in 7 it will finish transferring the file and then sit there for 3 minutes doing nothing but pretending that some final bit is being transferred

Probably.  Do any sort of transferring via command line and it will be fast.  I ended up teaching her how to use the FTP command line to grab files over the network, because it's so slow copying poo poo through explorer.exe.  They really unicorned up the new windows codebase.

More interesting findings:

There is now an ADVANCED setting in Power Options that automatically hibernates my laptop EVEN if it's plugged in after 3 hours.  I happen to like leaving it on over night so this bugged me.  There is no apparent way to disable that setting in the main interface, you have to go digging around in the advanced options menu.

I turned off User Account Control and tried to turn off all restrictions but it still pops up an administrator permission dialogue every time I try to move an EXE or other sensitive file type.  In addition, I can't run this damn keygen, probably for the same reason.  Turns out I Just had to run as administrator.  Still, more of a pain than it used to be.

I also enjoy how the first time I open a picture in explorer it has to go to the stupid picture app before asking if I actually wanted to use the basic explorer photo viewer that is 10 times less of a hassle to use.  AND, when I finally got to using photo viewer, it took 10 times longer than in Windows 7 to render photos.  Literally sat there for 3 seconds per photo to wait for it to unblur.  Is it really that goddamn hard to port something you ALREADY HAVE operational?????

The more I use this the more I wonder who in the world they are designing it for.  Power users are going to be totally baffled by how hard it is to do basic stuff with no indication of how to go back to the way things used to be, if such a thing is even possible; and casual users are going to be unable to figure out how to use anything.  At best they will be stuck in the new Start menu interface which is barely usable and a giant bottleneck.  I try to think of using this as a touch interface and I can't imagine how constantly fumbling with corners to switch apps and digging through 3 menus to change the damn volume will appeal to anyone.  Even when you get there it's obviously not touch-optimized, the volume bar and its marker are so skinny that it's hard enough to manipulate with a mouse.  It's just staggering.
