The best would be a complicated system involving both of those things, plus bonuses for participating in competitions or submitting banners or whatever!!!

since you are basing this on another forum's system, the main way to obtain points there as far as I have seen is 5 per post, 0.1 per word in a post, and items like "giving trees" which distribute a certain amount of points per day or something and can be bought for exorbitant amounts

Doing it for positive post ratings sounds neat but I wonder how difficult linking post ratings to karma (or whatever system is used) would be.
