alright looking at the site on this WIDE AS unicorn monitor there's loads of boring empty space either sides of the banner so here's my sales pitch: some interesting looking background image that's always there to sit behind the banner and complement it, sort of framing it from the sides as it were. Eg maybe a load of silhouettes of characters or something. Any volunteers?
GUIDELINES:
As wide as you want it to be (as long as file size isn't too much) eg the monitor I'm using is 1920 px wideFits in with general colour scheme, subtle so it doesn't detract attention from banner950x144 blank space in middle for banners to sitMaybe something either side of that space to act as a sort of border for the banner? I dunnoat either far edge of the image have it tail off into a solid colour

Alright, I tried modifying the "Fat Pipe" banner with a solid color background:

just stretch the image

or tile it!

no stretching and tiling is BAD DESIGN god no taste

but the background is tiled OOOOH NOW WHAT HOMO
